Re: More date codes
E=May 2-9 = 2nd day of the month, 1949 I bet you can figure out G 14-9. Both likely to have been on an early '50 year model bike, however there were lots of '49s so possibly a very late '49.

Re: More date codes
My bad Restless. They can also be ten years later depending on features in the cylinders. Drain holes are the big one, whether they drain into the side or not. So your cylinders are possibly '60 models, the other pair for '61 depending on those holes.

Re: More date codes
It's simple, Bill--- if they are 1948-53 (I think?!) and drain into the cylinder bore, you will see the hole near the bottom of the bore, below the travel of the piston.restless wrote:Thanks very much now I just have to find a picture of the two types of drain holes.

I'm not positive on the years, but I think they correspond with the hydraulic pushrods years. If I'm wrong, I'll get corrected, hopefully...!
If the hole is not present in the cylinder bore, the drain is a passageway down the side of the cylinder to a corresponding channel in the case at the cylinder base flanges.
So, if your cylinders are supposed to drain internally (not into the bore), and you have a base gasket without the drain hole, there's nowhere for the oil to go. I think that's already been mentioned.
