Clutch adjustment on '55 FL

#1

Post by 1955fle »

The clutch on my '55 FL was sticking a little, so I took it apart to clean it. Everything looks to be in good shape. I am putting it back together and wanted to know the spacing for the pressure plate nuts. It is a 5 finger clutch. The manual says 31/32 from the back of the clutch basket to the edge of the pressure plate for a stock 3 finger clutch. Would this be the same for the 5 finger clutch? Just want to make sure before I tighten it.

Is it a 3-1/2 plate early style or a 5 plate later style? Which springs does it have? The 5 plate clutch pack with late type springs is set up with 1-1/32 spacing, 3-1/2 plate with early springs at 31/32. The number of clutch hub fingers has no effect on the spring pack spacing.

This is a later style with 5 plates. It is a BDL 1 1/2" belt conversion and has the springs that came with the kit. This setup was installed about 15 years ago. The clutch was working fine and I should have taken note of how many turns the pressure plate nuts were in, but I just removed them without counting. I think in the past I just tightened them evenly until they did not slip when the clutch was engaged, and still released when the clutch is disengaged.
