Clutch Cable advise

#1

Post by 58demon »

Any recommendations for a GOOD clutch cable for my 58 FLH (with mouse trap) or cable end?

I replaced the original cable after it finally broke last season and the replacement has already stretched out to the final point of adjustment after just 300 miles. I have looked on line for a new cable end figuring maybe it would be better to do that at the mouse trap end then spend another 50 or 60 on a new cable that will probably do the same thing. I have followed all the MT adjustment and lubrication information I could find so I do not believe that is the problem, just cheap ass new cable.

Any suggestions or purchase recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you can do any better than Barnett:

I'm planning to make my clutch cable because I think it's the only guarantee it will actually fit. I've already found where I can buy the inner and nylon lined outer off the roll..

Unfortunately it is a Barnett cable that stretched out, maybe it was just my luck to get that 1 out of 1000. I will trim and place a new end on and watch it closely, always keep a repair kit in the tool bag just in case.

Thanks Guys

Was that a crimp type? Are you going to solder it?

Actually I intend to take her for one last ride today and then put her away. Will worry about the fix in about 3months, going in for shoulder surgery on May 3rd so my riding season is coming to a close already. I may just send it back to Barnett , already spoke with them about that and since I am not going to be riding anyway that seems to be the best alternative.

Agree. Send it back. They should replace it as it's defective and you've paid good money. Lucky it wasn't a brake cable!

Best wishes for surgery and here's hoping you are back riding in good time.
