SU Carb

#1

Post by gallaecus »

i have an SU carb (JZX1611) on my 65 pan motor. gas was leaking out of the brass tickler. i looked in the bowl and found a fish scale on the needle seat area for the float. so maybe that was the cause, oddly there is a hole straight thru the tickler, but i guess your finger blocks the hole to prime it ?

does anyone know of a link for a diagram of this carb?

any knowledge you can pass on of this carb is appreciated

thanks.

Couple of threads reading for you:

https://www.hydra-glide.net/phpBB3/view ... arb#p98277

Am not sure if it's mentioned in either of those posts but the regular car needle and seat won't flow enough on gravity feed. Rivera Engineering make a special high flow one.

Hmm interesting, I really haven't had it running for more than 30 seconds. And the gas. That was dripping on the exhaust from the tickler was kind of a deterrent to take it for a spin. But carb is back on. And it doesn't seem to leak now . :) I will check those threads out in a bit. Thank you

Hydra74 pointed the way. The tickler is a little compressor that presses the bowl to burp a little gas into the throat for prime. It's the original CV carb, with a little attention it will work very well.

I think the high flow needle and seat is needed as I am having trouble getting the bowl to fill up.

Is the su eliminater a brand by Rivera? Is it a carb or a rebuild kit ? Would my hif44 have the same float level setting as the one posted in documentation link article other ? Thx.

Greatest carb ever made for a pan. I've been running them on three pans for the last thirty years. Great gas mileage, easiest starting and smooth acceleration. That thing is so simple you could literally rebuild it in the side of the road in ten minutes. Couple of squirts of WD-40 down the dome every once and a while and it will never let you down. That tickler allows ya to flood those cylinders. I always loved the sliding dome thing. Was going to the Harley Vous in the early 90s on the NYS Thurway doing 70. Looked down at the carb and the entire top of the dome was covered in frost. Had a Triumph Spitfire that had two of the on it. Plain and simply it's a great carb and you can usually find them on the Fless-Bay dirt cheap. Bob L

The article shows the float being level with the bottom of the bowl, So I wasn't sure if that was for my carb as well. Or was the eliminater a remake or a rebuild kit. And I can't find anything yet that shows float settings for the carb I have :D
