Stuck Seat Post

Hit a pretty solid bump yesterday.

The ride felt bumpy today, and this is what I found (see below).

I tired pulling it up with a bar through the seat post swivel bracket - no joy.

I also tried removing the retaining nut at the bottom - again no joy.

Any suggestions?

Never mind. :)

Drenched it with penetrating oil and put the bar through the hole and gently pulled AND twisted and it popped right out.

You would probably benefit from a set of springs made by Dave Croft. They are customizable to any weight rider; they work similar to 'progressive' shock springs.
I think he gets around $60 for a set, but you will never bottom out like that again.

Thanks. That's a good idea.

Funny thing is... I only weigh 175. You'd think the stock springs (they are compressed to 11") would be more than adequate.... but I have bottomed out occasionally.

The average male adult back in 1956 weighed 168lbs and was 68" tall. That was 2 generations ago.. who said we stopped evolving??...

You hear people say that 'we' were smaller back then. I think an average sized man 60 or 70 years ago was about 5'-6" and 140 pounds. Most people I know are far bigger than that. So what was good for the average rider then, just won't cut it today.
Dave's springs are stronger for heavier riders. I've got a set for my '52, and I hope to try them out within a year or two. But I bought them after reading time and again about guts that got them and how great they work.

It's interesting. The manual describes how to adjust the springs, and they reference the riders weight. So although we have all *evolved* (LOL), the instructions *should* produce a setup that doesn't bottom out. But (LOL again).... I bet the springs (60 years old) have lost their kick. Time to try some progressives.

I should clarify that Dave Croft's springs are not "progressively wound", which have the coils wound tighter on one end than the other, getting 'progressively' tighter from one end to the other. That's a whole nuther ball game.
Dave Croft offers a combination of springs to match the rider's weight. Maybe I can take a photo later....

If the springs are bottoming out it seems likely to me that your springs are now shorter than they were when new. I would highly recommend a set of Dave Croft's springs. I have them in my panhead and in my WL, and that cured the bottoming out that I had experienced before replacing my old set of springs.

I just bought two sets of springs from Dave croft and I'm so happy with them. I put them in my Knucklehead first and now I can actually ride that bike! I'm in the 280-300 pound range, so finding springs that work was a challenge. Very very very happy. I have his number somewhere. If you need it, message me and I'll get it to you
