Rear Hub different from Front Hub?

#1

Post by PanRider »

I've torn down my hubs and discovered the rear Thrust bearing outer cover is different from the front. It looks like wear to me but wanted to make sure. Here are pics of both hubs. The cork gasket on the rear was messed up because i assume the cover is damaged. Clarification? Where can I get just a thrust bearing outer cover? Front cover is on top, rear on bottom.

Just checking to make sure . . . .
There are two "covers" per hub.
Do you have both covers?
There is the inner cover 43574-35, and there is the outer cover 435666-35.

They are called "interchangeable" wheels because they are the same, front to rear, rear to front, from 1941 to 1964 I think are the years. Top picture looks good, bottom has certainly been modified, Ive never seen that before.
You can probably find a schematic of the hub and all its parts in the data base here, if you don't already have a manual.

If you don't mind aftermarket, you can try 45Parts Depot for an individual cover.

Got a manual online but didn't see anything that looked like the rear hub. What you are looking at is the complete hub with the outer covers. I didn't screw the rear one together yet because it looked different and looks like it has been modified or worn. Why would anyone modify it to look like that? I've had several other bikes and have never seen a cover like that. Does anyone know if VTwin or J&P carry just the covers or have suggestions where to get one? Anyone have one to sell?
Thanks for the responses.

Bottom cap is screwed up and should be identical to the top one. What year is the bike? The gease zerk appeared in '56. Any hub will fit from '35 (starting on 45 rear wheels) to '66. But there are several minor variations over the years.
