David:

Where are you located? maybe you could get together with somebody from the board to troubleshoot this.

I'm in Eastern PA, in case you;re anywhere near me.

You'd want to take the wires that normally attach to the generator, and tape them up so they don't short to anything else.

No voltage oe amperage. Is that possible going hooked to battery. Completed test as stated

Should I ground the f directly to the battery to see if there is ground issue.

I used alligator clips from f to cylinder head and other place's.

Expert put generator on bench and spun the motor. Then grounded f and the generator changed speeds or sped up

Are you sure you have good ground connections? Not connected to painted or rusty surfaces? Insure that all connections, both the wire terminals and the frame are clean bare metal. Just a possibility.

Update,

Standing battery voltage 6.055
Connected to A post standing voltage 1.254. This is positive hooked to A post

I guess I will take the generator apart and see if the guy who rebuilt switched A post and F post.

Accidentally had positive to F and read 5.95 volts on F to ground.

Checked system using same process and Di not see increase in voltage but had voltage

You sure your battery is good? I wouldn't expect to see voltage drop that much.

Pay attention at what you're using for reference material. The A and F terminals switched their location between the model 61 and the model 65A generator (the 65A is what is most likely to be used in reference material). Without disassembling the generator you can tell which post is wired internally as A and which is F as long as you have a good multimeter. With no wires attached to the terminal posts, take an ohm reading between each post and ground. The post with the higher resistance (by just a few ohms) is the F terminal ... Perry

What would cause that type of voltage drop. I will check the resistance on A and F.

I pulled a rebuilt model 58 generator off the shelf (essentially the same generator as your model 61) and motored it (which is basically what you're doing when you jumper from battery positive to generator A and battery negative to generator body and F). I had a somewhat recently charged 18amp SLA battery. It read 6.20 volts, when I motor the generator, battery voltage dropped to 5.88. When I stopped motoring the battery recovered to 6.15 volts. You said you had your battery tested and given a CCA rating. As an aside CCA stands for cold cranking amps. I have no idea what my SLA battery's CCA would be ... Perry

All,

Removed the generator and did inspection. all looks correct by diagrams in the book's.

Could a bad armature create this condition.

I am getting 1.5 volts at the A post to ground. and when I test my battery with this condition hooked up I get 5.9-6.0 volts at the battery post.
