32E test proceedure
The manual says to disconnect the wires from the generator relay terminal and the battery positive terminal, and then connect a jumper wire between the two terminals. Next I am supposed to start the bike and check for normal charge rate (4 amps with high beam on) but I don't see how the bike/light will run without any wires from the battery positive other than the one from the generator's relay post. Am I misreading or misunderstanding?
Mike

Mike
all you are doing is jumpering out the relay to see if that is the problem. just remove the wires from the relay and add a jumper.

Re: 32E test proceedure
Thanks John.
I understood that that was the objective but the HD service manual said specifically to disconnect the wires from the generator relay terminal and the battery positive terminal, and to connect a jumper directly between these two terminals. That section started with "follow the procedure step by step" but I couldn't see how I could start and run the bike with the light on after disconnecting the battery positive wire.

Re: 32E test proceedure
Hey Mike:
I think you're right about this. I never noticed before that it said that.
I think they meant to write
"disconnect the wires from the generator relay terminal and the relay battery terminal and connect a jumper wire directly between these two wires"
instead of
"disconnect the wires from the generator relay terminal and the battery positive terminal and connect a jumper wire directly between these two terminals"

Re: 32E test proceedure
Thanks Andy.
I just wanted to hear that it reads like a mistake to somebody else.
My thought was disconnect "gen" and "bat" wires from the relay and join them together. Start bike and check amps. with and w/o light on.

Re: 32E test proceedure
That'll work, with the caution that you are now also testing the wire between relay and generator as well.

Re: 32E test proceedure
Do you guys know the military "emergency" starting procedure for a bike with a dead battery?

Re: 32E test proceedure
Mike is the closest, remove the negative battery terminal, push or tow start in 2nd gear, reattach battery after it starts.

They left out:
"Replace generator armature after it overheats attempting to charge a dead battery."

Re: 32E test proceedure
And oh yeah,.....
"Open the choke when motor fires."
.... would help.
What really surprises me is that these things will run without the battery ground.

Re: 32E test proceedure
I would bet the voltage out of the 32E 1s pretty high when the battery is not connected.

Andy!
I have a real mental block about electrical things, and even when I think I understand, I don't.
(Someday I hope to start a thread with questions about battery-less operation for a mag-fired project, stalled for many years.)
Speaking of years, any news on those relays I sent you once upon a time?
