Re: panhead gearbox id
That is a code used by H-D to identify major components. Some refer to them as anti theft numbers. They can be traced to the original engine VIN.They are on frames, forks, and transmissions.what does the a4944 stamped on the front mean???
Use the search function on this site to find lots of VIN and related number info.

Re: panhead gearbox id
Possible, if it was used out of sequence. Usually they ended up in a bike built closer to the date code, often within a month. but all kinds of anomalies exist.would it be possible that this gearbox left the factory in a april 1962 frame???
You cannot. H-D has some of that information but only share it with Law Enforcement agencies, it is not available to the public. And H-Ds records are incomplete. If you have them trace your VIN they may or may not be able to help on a '62 model.and how do i trace the engine vin from the gearbox number??
