'49 VIN to verify

#1

Post by SouthBayJay »

Hello all, long time listener, first time caller. { Sorry.. cliché } ... Anyhow, had my 49 for a year now, bought through internet, seller was awesome, straightforward, provided me with VIN pics, belly# pics, which looked fine to me (with my limited knowledge ) belly#'s match. Received perfectly good title, all numbers matching. Fast forward to now. Had a guy come buy my place to buy some unrelated items, and he saw my panhead, and we looked it over and talked about it for a good while. ( Heck, he might even be on this forum ) ... Anyways, another great guy, way more knowledgeable about old Harleys than I, good chat with him. He bent down, looked at my VIN, and said "its bad/ fake" ... said the 49F looks good, but the numbers do not. Sooo, I really would like a 2nd, 3rd , 4th opinion... this would be kinda crap news to me. For what its worth, the boss looks "ok", I see no evidence of grinding down or building up. Thanks for your time! love the site. will def be participating more from now on.

That is a very nice factory stamp.
Pay no attention to this guy, he doesn't know anything about Harleys

They look good to me too. Now, not to take over the thread, but was '50 the last year of just an "E" or "F" stamp and model?

SouthBayJay!

I shall always defer to Eric,
but it looks good to me, when compared to this:

Any differences are what I would attribute to either a different force upon the hammer, or as shown in previous decades, differences in each motorman's stamps.

Thank you gentlemen ... a bit of relief. Inspired me to donate to the site. Cotten; are you implying that your picture yo just showed is ~also~ a legit #, just showing the possible variations?

Jaime,
Here is a '48 of my own. Note the similarities. Your number is fine.

I also see no issue with your numbers. Another example of '49 numbers...

I have a 49EL and a 49FL. Your numbers look great to me. Notice how the 49 numbers seem to favor the lower area of the number pad.

Jamie!

I went to snag your photo to save in my library of VINs,
and found I already had a photo of it from 11/24/11.

Interesting ... I knew the bike had been for sale/ listed a few times before I got my grubby hands on it. Wouldn't doubt if someone posted it here in past with question...

Ha Ha, well he is in fact a little bit of a wheeler-dealer he was buying a non-Harley m/c from me at the time... but I don't want to assume any malice was intended. Especially if he is a forum member. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Very pleased with my 4+ positive opinions from y'all. Thanks again.
