Hard starting or no starting

#1

Post by dean62 »

Got a 62 Pan. just got it on the road. Having problems starting. Set new point at 22 and new condenser. checked timing, good. checked valves adjustments, good. checked compression and the reading we got were low 60 to 65 psi. This was done by kicking and had throttle open. It has been started since all the adjustment have been made and ran good. But it is extremely hard to start. kick over easy but takes to many kicks and then it seems start by accident. Got a super E carb. It is delivering gas. when it runs, it runs well. All help is appreciated.

Could be an intake manifold leak.

Could you post a picture of the two spark plugs?

If you went & checked it all over it should be 2 dry & 1-hot kickgone!-- def. bubble test the intake!--& make sure when you twist throtle you see a stream shoot down the manifold!---to hot for a enrichment valve!--I give 2squirts,2dryfires,&1-hotkick & shes on!--I would check manifold!-as you said when it does start its by accident!-sounds like your sucking air somewhere.----Richie

I'll check for air leak and let you know. But I would think if it were an intake leak there would be accel popping when it was running and when I revved it up. When I'm riding it has good throttle response, no popping.

Dean---As STEVE said pull the plugs & the 1 thats still new & white looking is the leaker!---Also in the warm weather were having ,the enrichment will flood you out real easy if you have it on & twist the throtle for start-up!---Try without the enricher & see if she fires in 1-shot. Also bubble-test that manifold ,brush alot of soapy water on it & look for the leak!

Can't attach picture. They both look the same to me. Neither one looks new or white. I set the super E carb up to the reset position. Mixture 1 1/4 turn out, the idle just touching and 1/2 turn in. might this be wrong since this isn't new.

Plugs are harder to read with ethanol in the fuel

Dean!

The only vacuum leaks that behave the same are the ones that keep it from running at all.

Please bubble-test: http://virtualindian.org/11techleaktest.html
S&S manifolds are subject to porosities, so inspect thoroughly.

Note that with a Pan, it is also prudent to test the pan cover screw over each intake port.

Make sure the idle adjustment is not set to low as this will cause hard starts when everything else checks out good.

Thanks all: I just got home and read the message's. I'm on my way out to work on all suggestions. I did change from drag pipes to cigar type mufflers. I'll order the other Jet and a rebuild kit for my carb. This will take several days. But I'll let you know the outcome.
Thanks again Dean62

Good news is I learned how to do a bubble test and I found the leak. Bad news is it is a pin hole on the head next to the intake port rear cyclinder. Not sure whether it can be repaired in place or not. Have to do some reseach on how this pin hole can be repaired. Also found a crack in the Carb bowl where the flange bolts tighten up. No fuel leakage and i don't think it contributed to the problem I'm having. I keep you informed on progress.
