Stock chain and compensator on the 65. It gives up no grief. Ray

I've been running the 1 1/2" belt drives setup for over 25 years on the two tin primary panheads that I've owned (still own one). The first was a phase three and I really liked it. One day I was at a light, pulled in the clutch and it really grabbed, bike lurched forward and scared me! The clutch then started acting normal but was strangely easier to pull with the mousetrap. Didn't think much of it so I rode it for a few more months and then for some reason I decided to take my primary apart. I discovered the clutch hub lining had disintegrated and there were brass rivets embedded in the belt but it never broke!

I'm now running a primo setup on the pan that I kept. I finally broke a belt one day because I cut louvers in my aftermarket inner primary and a bolt had fallen into it.

One broken belt in over 25 years! I run a stock motor, don't race it or do burnouts. I closed down my primary chain oiler and routed it to the rear chain. I have much better oil consumption, less leaks, don't have to adjust the chain in motel parking lots and its smoother and quieter. I always carry a spare belt on long trips.

The stock chain is fine but works better in the aluminum primary's like what my Dyna Glide has. The belt drive is a really good fix for older HD's.

Just my two cents worth.

I just swapped out my 1 1/2 inch 11mm BDL belt after 12k. It still looked good. How frequently do you guys change your belts?

My opinion is directly proportional to the originality I am or not shooting for on the build.
Never had a belt bust lose, or a chain break.
The belt system I use are from Tech Cycle, the best by my book.

I can't vote in this poll because I have both chain and belt. The Primo belt drive on my chopper has given me 42 years of service, although ridden less and less the last couple of decades.
I have an M-6 tensioner installed on the stock chain on my '77 shovelhead. Some people might think the M-6 is a gimmick, but I think it works just fine.
And I changed the primary chain on my '94 Evo after 50 or 60 thousand miles. No issues there at all.

So my "new" '56 Panhead has an enclosed belt. I managed to blow it on Saturday pulling into traffic, was not a happy camper.

It appears that the person who installed it just left the primary chain oiler in place, I am sure that is not the optimal setup.

So what does everyone do with the Crankcase breather when they convert?

I was thinking of changing back to a chain, but if I can make this work consistently I do like the smoothness of the ride.

Best regards, Harry

hi harry take off inner primary and rework breather with a hose and let it drip on drive chain. kills 2 birds with one hose! lol. btw I run a 1 1/2" belt and have since ive owned my pan. only time I blew a belt was when I left a primary screw or 2 in the cover in my rush to get out one night. I paid the price for that !!!

Question- Will a 2" belt fit in the stock Hydraglide primary chain case? I know the 1-1/2" is not a problem, but is the 2" too wide?
Thanks in advance...
