Re: Primary drive poll
And as a newbie to the Pan world, I am assuming the clutch is a dry clutch, doesn't the oil breather mist the plates inside the chain case?

Just out of curiosity, if you run a belt drive (enclosed or exposed) what have you guys done with the breather spigot/outlet?

Re: Primary drive poll
The solution, as Little Stan points out, is to divert the oil mist to the rear chain. To do this, cut off the 90-degree portion of the crankcase breather bolt (that portion that points into the primary chaincase), then attach a short piece of rubber hose. I think 3/8 fuel line is what I used. You may have to rotate the breather bolt so it points to the rear drive chain/sprocket. If you don't want to cut an original part, buy a repop breather bolt to cut.ChicagoSlim wrote:Just out of curiosity, if you run a belt drive (enclosed or exposed) what have you guys done with the breather spigot/outlet?
You know, it's funny- when I put a belt drive on my old '41 panhead chopper back in 1974, there was no internet to turn to for information. I was faced with this same issue, and came up with the solution that everyone uses today. Back in 1974, I thought I invented it! But really, it's just a logical solution to a simple problem.

Re: Primary drive poll
Working on a friends '62, he wants to go belt, which I just picked up used on eBay (seller taped the belt up like an accordion into a baseball sized hunk of rubber...oh well, I have spare belts)
I plan to install my go to clutch, the Barnett scorpion, but have never run one of these dry...anyone have experience with that?

Re: Primary drive poll
I did run a BDL in this custom Pan bobber during years and thousand kilometers without trouble but alignement was checked before using it with all brand new parts and of course had a spare belt in case of!
I also use a foot clutch "stop pin" as describe before by a member and enjoy it.
Now that I am probably going to use a OEM side car (in stock) and a right frame in the future with my complete rebuild I am expecting to use a primary chain...

LOL .… Mines been seriously marking its spot in the shop. She's a chain driven primary, strait out of the early 50's.Frankenstein wrote: ↑Sun Aug 12, 2012 2:44 pm There is no downside to a belt, except the aforementioned territorial marking syndrome associated to old harleys.
