Brought myself a 62 FLH if January. Disassembled it and cleaned up and replaced some broken parts. Didn't do any engine work. It seemed to run OK the few times I rode it before disassembling. Long story shortened, I started it a couple of days ago and in the short time it took to set up the idle ( about 10 minutes ) my chrome head pipes turned to gold. I know that this will happen over time, but this quick. I had a fan on the engine while I was setting up the idle, and mixture. I replaced the drag pipes with indepent cross over pipes with cigar type mufflers. Do I need to set something else or is this normal.
Thanks Dean62

Re: Head pipes Golden
Dean,
First of all, welcome to the forum. There's lots of great info here!
Some yellowing of the pipes is not unusual, but, you might have set the mixture too lean. Try backing it off a bit. Now that your pipes are yellow, you won't be able to use them as a metric for your mixture, but the color and condition of your plugs will do. You might want to pull them and clean them so that you have a clean baseline to start with.

Hey There!
I would have sheck the ignition to. Coloring the pipes could point to a way to advanced spark and inkorrekt timing. Sheck the forum for "timing" issues!!
