Since that 48 sold for 70k these 48 motors are coming out of the wood work.Apparently newly made too.
Cant believe the bidders too.

Re: Another ebay 48.
Doesn't the 1 before the 48 (year) represent the 74" F engine and a 2 before the year would represent a 61" E engine?1950Panhead wrote:Belly numbers were sequential, a case set could be either an EL or FL.

Re: Another ebay 48.
I have a FL with EL belly numbers. The motor numbers look like OEM stamps. I figured they originally planned to use my cases for an EL but then ended up using them in an FL?HD48FL wrote:Hog54 wrote:Since that 48 sold for 70k these 48 motors are coming out of the wood work.Apparently newly made too.

Re: Another ebay 48.
Well since the vin is obviously bogus,it probably was a FL before they shaved off the vin boss.

Re: Another ebay 48.
You'll have to explain how the VIN is obviously bogus. Are you referring to the ebay VIN? I can't get the ebay ad to come up so I can't see it.
Edit: ok...switched computers and got to the ad on ebay. I see what you mean about bogus numbers. The number pad definitely looks tampered with.

Re: Another ebay 48.
It does? Obviously?
it's obvious the numbers don't match. It's obvious that the seller says there's no paperwork.
But I don't see "Obviously" tampered number pad. What am I missing?

I dont know, maybe the pitting on the number pad from grinding off the original cast surface.Maybe the lines above the timing hole cause he used too big of a bit.On top of that, the numbers arent even the right font.

Re: Another ebay 48.
Here are the things that don't look right to me...
1) The pock marks in the number pad. Looks like it was built up with welding at some point.
2) The number pad dosn't have the same sand cast texture as the rest of the case. Looks like it was ground flat.
3) There is more evidence that the number pad was tampered with above the timing plug hole. There seems to be a ridge in the case where it was ground down.
4) The closed top "4" stamp is not correct for a '49 motor number. Also, the "2" should have a small tail on it. Compare the "4" and "2" in the photo of my motor number above.
Sometimes photos can be deceiving, but in this case there are a lot of red flags that I see.

Re: Another ebay 48.
My 48 pan is an E & has 148 belly #'s.
I e-mailed Bruce Palmer & he said the book is wrong.
In 48 all EL & FL have 148 belly #'s
in 49 all EL & FL have 249 belly #'s
Early 50 EL & FL have 350 belly #'s.
Regards , Flatboy

I was under the impression that all FL Panhead belly numbers started with a 1 and all EL Panhead belly numbers started with a 2. I've never heard of any Panhead belly numbers starting with a 3.

Re: Another ebay 48.
That ebay engine has some of the worst numbers ever. Except for that guy that appeared to have carved his in with a dull knife!

There was a 50 case halve the other day on ebay and the belly number started with 350-.I cant remember tho what the 3 was for.
