For my fellow riders in the World!

Post by HARLEYMAN53 »

My Pan head seems to not wont to work properly no matter what i do so maby i can need some help. When the engine is cold and i start riding the engine does like it would if you turn the ignition on and off in rapped movement. And goes away when the engine gets hot. I think it could be a manifold leek but haven´t done the test yet. Also when i try to turn the engine off when driving at 80 km/h the engine will keep running but not clean, kind of like when the gas is running out or the battery is going empty. Also my front cyl only have 6 bar compression and back 8 bar last time i tested with throttle open and cold engine. The motor starts on 1 st try and runs strong when worm. I can feel a big diff when starting the engine warm verses cold, much better compression when warm witch is not strange. Going to do a new reading tomorrow.
Thank´s, HM//

HM53!

Operating with a vacuum leak risks much for little.

Push rods too tight; they loosen up when warm.

You risk great harm to the motor if operated with a vacuum leak.

Aircompressors are not uncommon in dumpsters and alley trash in my region.
I have a spare for you if you can pick it up.

Looks like Sweden is a long way to travel for a trash picked compressor. lol
By the way 1 bar = 14.5psi

Why are you doing that?

hi harleyman53,question to ask, when you had the plugs out, what was the color of the insulator, gas know days, make it hard to read, also is it pinging,or detonating when your riding,1 more thing to try when riding, pull the chock out a little bit,see if it cleans out.let us know,if it makes a different...................with respect.....JR

Why i turn´d the engine off when riding? barbecue i noticed that the engine diden´t wanna stop right a way when turning the switch off, that´s why. I was doing a compression test again last night and the front cyl was acting real funny! Only 3 bar pressure and after a while it traveled to 4, 6 and then it stop! Rear was 7 bars. Hardly no comp at all cold engine when kick starting, but 7 bar warm for rear cyl. I have taken off the front cyl and found that the exhaust oiler have broken loose. I think it blocked the exhaust valve/spring and by that made the phenomena of giving different readings on the compression meter! I am putting on new rings just to be sure and well see what the reading will be then. I forgot to say that the spark plug was full off carbon after every ride on the front cyl, The rear not.

HARLEYMAN53!

That is a classic sign of a vacuum leak.

Your carb is tuned for the lean cylinder, and soots the other.

HARLEYMAN53!

You already have gone deep if you found an oiler (you meant intake?) in the exhaust valvespring.

Please find a way to bubble test the head's intake manifold nipple while the head is on the bench.
When you put it back together, bubbletest the assembly any way you can.

If more air leaks occur to one cylinder than the other,
the carb must be adjusted to accomodate the weak cylinder.
Thus the mixture is rich in one, and better in the other.
The better one is more broken.

The output side of a shop vac can be used in place of a compressor for low volume applications like checking for intake leaks, some vacuum hoses will fit right in the manifold.

I have an associate who uses a CO2 fire extinguisher.
He can tell you which side of the bike leaks, and nothing more.

Any method that demands the machine be running will miss the smaller leaks.
Bubbles will tell you exactly where leaks occur, how many, and a measure of their size, before you risk your motor by running it.

You won't find pinholes like these without 12 to 15 psi:

S&SPORE.jpg
Similar leaks are often found in head castings, between fins by the port, at the nipples and rivets, and even occasionally through the pan cover screw over the port.

One must have full knowledge of the leak to properly repair it.
