That is a really nice motor and the cam cover and tappet screen are correct for late '52 which the numbers indicate. The seller is also a great guy, Steve Barber, and well known for good original stuff!

Well I was just wondering because even the left side case is 53 and up style case.Even the oil pump I have only seen on 53s and 54s because its the same one I have.I guess they used 53 cases for the last of the 52s.

It's a very nice specimen.
One thing I did noticed, however, was the aluminum valve covers and the D-rings. I know those weren't on any '52 motor, early or late.

I'm saying they are aluminum without knowing for sure, but they have that appearance.

Whats even stranger is the lifter blocks look like aluminum too and im pretty sure they didnt make aluminum lifter blocks for hydraulic lifters.Aluminum lifter blocks ended when hydraulics came out in 53.Atleast I have never seen an aluminum block with hydraulic oil hole in it because I looked for it for a long time.

Well, I'm not going to beat it up or pick it to shreds--- I'd like to own it...!

Im not trying to pick it apart but it would be really strange if they built it like that from the factory and have a tappet oil screen doing nothing. :D

It has a fairly high VIN, so obviously later in the production year. Who can tell what went on in the factory in those years, but perhaps they ran out of the 8-rib sand-cast covers and started using the 'new' covers for '53.
This is all purely speculation, of course. When a motor is 60 years old, it's impossible to know it's history, and what has happened to it over the years.

Do the screws in the lifter blocks look correct, Palmers book says 49 last year of the Flat head screws on the lifter blocks, are these the correct ones? The rocker covers(pans) bolts look like Allen heads, is that correct? Thanx for any help.

I have a 52 pan with an almost as high serial. It has the oil screen, oil pump, aluminium lifter blocks, push rod hydraulics and late cam cover exactly like the ebay motor. Had the bike for 44 years and it has never been mixed with parts of later years. Also know the 3 bikes with sequental numbers. All four are identical. Cam cover srrews should be slotted. Rocker covers are stainless and D-rings low. Ebay motor incorrect in this way. But it is othervise very correct.

My 52 had the 8 rib cover,aluminum blocks,hydraulic p-rods and the tappet screen.A buddy of mine had an engine within 50 numbers that didn't have the tappet screen.

Shop Dope #330, April 18, 1952, states that the screen/checkball first appeared around VIN #3529.
My '52 is just under #4000 and Yes, it has the screen/checkball.
People call it a "tappet screen", but the idea for the check-ball was to hold oil in the upper end to provide more immediate oil supply to the hydrailic pushrods upon cold startup. And the screen to prevent small particles from fouling the hydraulic units in the pushrods.
