45 cam identification

#1

Post by myers1960 »

I am putting together a 45 motor and came across a set of cam gears that are marked 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G. I also have a set of cams marked 1,2,3 and 4. Can either set of these cams be run in any stock motor in any year from 37-73? In the Palmers book it shows only the 2G cam in the cam chart but says it is only for 59-73 models. The part # is 25502-59 and notes that it has a .575" bearing surface at the cover end? This cam set is in nice shape and I would like to run them if possible. All other cam dimensions are exactly the same as the gears marked without a "G". Any information would be appreciated.

yep, the "G" cams will work just fine, make sure you check the fit at the bushings in the cam cover. The "G" cams were for the servicars which, of course, are a Harley Model G or GE.

25502-37 was used through 58.
25502-59 was used through 73.
The gear cover changed with the cam, you can use an early cam and early cover on any year engine or you can use an late cam and late cover on any year engine.

With the exception of the rear intake, all 1937-73 cams for normal motors are the same: solo, military, trike. The grind is also used in the late RL.

Myers---I just did a motor job using those exact cams in a 51 flattie45 over the summer!--The bike runs great & he is planning to ride down to DAYTONA with us this year!.--We told him dont worry ,well take our time & not push to fast all the time--We did a test on the PKWY & at 55 he was ok with it at 75 it was fun ,but only in spurts here & there! So we should have a nice run, I got 9 -1966 & older bikes going--We got to talkin at the shop a few weeks ago & we havent rode our oldschoolers in 4yrs. to DAYTONA from N.J. IM itchin bad!-& the ol-Lady is not going! :) --58flh
