Shifter clutch 2&3

#1

Post by ixtee »

Engaging clutch to pull away bike said "clunk" and stalled immediately. Another biker helped getting it off the road. Gearbox was hopelessly jammed. Took off the rear chain and got it home. Problem was the chifter clutch on the picture, installed 4 years and 12000 kilometers ago. One of the dogs had jammed 2nd while 1st was engaged. 4years ago had a similar problem. I personally think the aftermarket clutches did not get correct heat treatment. Anyone else with similar problems? Got a new aftermarket clutch in and treating it like a newborn baby...

I have never seen an original break up like that !
I have seen dozens of badly chipped ones & lots of burned & blued selector forks ( where the rider has tried to HOLD it in gear) but never seen a dog break off an original !!!

I've had better luck with welding OEM but worn gears up (with stellite), than in using repop clutchgears and kickergears..

I bought a slightly worn clutchgear last weekend at the AMCA show in Raalte, but it needs some welding...

When you are in first gear the second & high shifter clutch should be in the neutral position. Your transmission is in the need of a serious rebuild.
When you have two shifter clutches engaged at the same time the transmission will lock up. You're lucky you had an aftermarket shifter clutch in there that was hardened too much. The dogs broke before causing major damage to the rest of your tranny. You could have too much endplay on main shaft
and/or shifter drum, or shifter fork alignment could be way out of spec or all of the above. If you need to use an aftermarket second and high shifter clutch during your rebuild, the only one I would recommend would be a "Samwel" one. They are the correct hardness and have the correct ramp and back cut on the dogs.

That's not what happened.
A torn off dog jammed 2nd while first was engaged.
Replaced the clutch and didn't change anything else and it shifts better then ever.
Got a used oem clutch via Pascal (thanx!) Which i'm gonna refurbish and install next winter.
