Great job Pan Pal. I agree with CC Rider. I couldn't part with a bike that I had put so much blood, sweat and tears into. But I also understand the need to support the habit. Good Luck.

Great thread PanPal! This is the first I've seen it. Must have been occupied on Camaig site when it started it totally escaped my notice. Excellent descriptions and pics... Thank you!!
I think the previous post (#262) was meant for the current (no pun intended) battery thread...

...but it resurrected some great stuff.

Re: Why did this 58 FL get parked?
Cmcadam,
Not real easy to gut. Drain the acid. I pry open the glued top first and it doesn't look real neat and clean but gets it open and the plates will slide out with the top. I cut off the lead bars attaching the plates to the lid +/- terminals where they meet the plastic top. You can drill and tap the lead from the inside of the top for the positive and negative ring connectors later. Then clean up the pried open battery lid and case edges with a heat gun and a sander, you wont see the edges when you tape the lid back on. Now you have a empty case with 2 dividers molded inside creating the 3 separate cells. I use a hack saw blade to cut the webs out on the sides of the battery. Then its a chore! I've used long end mills and die grinders with carbide bits and whittle away at the webs where they attach to the bottom inside the case. I've used a forstner bit with some success as well, but it takes a bit to cut the webs out and clean them up so you can fit the biggest or most batteries in there. I tape the top on with Black Duct tape and it looks like the original battery and you can even use the original battery terminals on the cover. I've built 5 of these now. I have now learned they may not work well with a 3 brush generator and cutout relay which it what I built the last one for. I need batteries that vent.
Droptopford, glad you enjoyed it. All the technical information this site and the members provide are what keeps me coming back every day. After this bike, I destroyed my phone and my company replaced it with a I-phone. I cant seem figure out how to resize pictures and post them as easily as I did from my Android. Working on a 44U now but its not as marathon build like this one was. Its another resurrection to sell and fund my bike addiction.
