Hogey....
I would cut the clutch shell, like the factory did, and not worry about the rivits as they only cut about 1/3 of the head. And a quick tack weld could restore any weakness....
It's best not to cut the gear as that could present a problem in the future should it ever need replacement, One does not need a custom ring gear.

Coming in late here, I have each basket with the solid and laminated ring gears.
