Battery
1962 with Electric Start added. Currently running a car battery in the trunk. I need to replace it, but need some specs as to what is ok to run.

Re: Battery
IMHO
Presumed 12volt
Any car battery will be more than adequate for your electric starting.
However, be aware that generators have relatively low charge rates and partially charged batteries die quicker.
I would put a modern trickle/maintenance charger on it whenever parked.
Nifty

Re: Battery
Yes, it is 12 Volt. I was concerned that "too much" battery could harm the generator/charging system. I was going to go with a smaller sized car battery...

Re: Battery
You only asked about battery and going to a smallish car battery is a good move.PastorErik1 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 11:03 pm Yes, it is 12 Volt. I was concerned that "too much" battery could harm the generator/charging system. I was going to go with a smaller sized car battery...
You are right to be concerned, and should use a 65-69 H-D FL type 3 pole mechanical regulator, or equivalent modern electronic regulator, both are intended for electric start applications. If you use the small 2 pole "Bosch" style reg off an iron-head XL, or the wrong electronic reg, you can fry generator in elec start application.
Do not use a car 3 pole regulator (generator type) on a H-D type generator.

Re: Battery
A Big Twin battery or a garden tractor, ATV, powersports, etc. type is fine as long as the minimum cranking amperage rating is used. The battery box for electric start Servi-Cars was a box hanging under the floor of the cargo box. That frees up the space in the box.
Which Cycle electric regulator is on it? Which generator? Anything standard equipment for a later Sportster XLH e-start is fine.

Re: Battery
The electrical system uses exactly the same amount of kilowatt hours regardless of battery capacity.
If it is fully charged om installation, how would it discharge faster than a small battery?

Re: Battery
Make sure that your tranny-top screws are all snug. That's a trouble area with electric-starts. Key word snug.
