S-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d Servicar

Next up is this stretched out Servicar. I think it's a 1960.
The frame work is seamless. Looks very nicely done. What I'm wondering is how much it's been stretched.
Measures 47" from the back of the transmission to the rear axle.
Image
I'm considering putting a Harbor Freight lawn cart bed on there making a little truck with likewise a little effort.
I got it running and even drove it around the yard but it has clutch and other issues.
Not having ridden it at speed, what do folks think the stretch will do for the handling?

Being forced to downsize but I'm gonna try to hang on to this at least for a while.
Might come in handy at my "dotage"

Service manual states wheel base is 61 in. Yours?

That's pretty wild. The buddy seat looks huge with all that space behind it. How many drive chains did you have to splice together or did you use something like 530 garage door chain? I can't really see the final drive from the picture, but I think I'm seeing the top run of a chain passing over an idler/tensioner sprocket.

Very interesting, never seen it done before. A friend planned to extend the frame and run an extra axle, never completed.
The rear brakes will lock easily with all the weight forward.
Those tires will hydroplane on a drop of water.
The tire mass takes a lot of power to accelerate, they're giant millstones.
The long WB invites grounding out on driveways, etc. with that exhaust.

Put a flat bed on it, flash up the rest, hire it and yourself out for biker funerals.
Or a tub, start a mobile dog wash.
Help subsidize your hobby

I'm confused.
Is this yours?
Are you gonna build one just like it?
Is this maybe just a joke?
Surfing the web for stuff to post?
What is keeping your project down?

I think a chain that long will need constant attention. Perhaps a jack shaft for two shorter runs would be practical, and easier to fab before the body is built on top. It looks like a fun project, but the weight could easily get out of hand. Good luck.

Wheelbase! Duh! Why didn't I think of that? Mines a whopping 88"

There is a jackshaft/idler gear arrangement. Photo is before the chain (which came with it fortunately) was on I think.

Thanks, kitabel for the handling tips. Right the tires are massive. Not sure what could be done about that as the nice fenders
were built for them. Lighter wheels? Widen axle somehow?
And the exhausts are low. That can certainly be fixed. Didn't I read in a Victory Library publication something about long 45" exhaust work best?

Nifty - Those are some wild ideas! Hot tub full of women sounds good too.

RooDog my good friend: No its not a joke, it's mine. Is that how I come off online?
As to my Paugho project (and this one) my Mothers passing at 96 who I've been the sole (well, we had some CNA help) caretaker for many years
has thrown my family into fits of insanity. Myself included. Four bedroom home being sold and me....?

So sorry to hear about your Mother.
And I know how crazy family can be.
I also did not know that this truck chassis is your current project, best wishes with that....
The exhaust length on a low compression, small displacement engine surely is of little consequence as long as it is not so long as to present an obstacle to the expulsion of the spent exhaust gasses. I would say not much longer than what it takes to clear the rider's ears.

This was when I first got it and swapped the Linkert for a Mikuni.
Have no idea what I'm doing.

My condolences to you on her passing. My mom is 90 and my siblings and I feel the same about her. It's gonna be tough when she goes.

Sorry about your mom Nick. I went through that almost 5 years ago with my mom at 91.
Hopefully the estate doesn't create a rift in the family, a common issue!
Best to you

Nifty - Those are some wild ideas! Hot tub full of women sounds good too.
Do the tub, maybe not hot, but all the jets, move to Vegas and I'm sure you could cruise the strip and fill it with nubiles, might need to hire a rider so you can be in tub too!
Of course, then the poor old 45 has to drag around a gazillion pounds of water plus 6 or so people, but at least the rear tyres would have traction to assist braking! Simultaneously, steering could be sketchy, a wheelstanding, sloshing, chick magnet, put independent rear brakes on and steer it like a tractor. Crazier things have been done without hurting anyone.
Hope I gave you a laugh.

On a more serious note, if it were mine, I'd restore frame to stock wheelbase, or buy another frame. (I am perfectly happy with my wife and don't want to move to Vegas)
Coz I'm a frame guy, I would bet that the extension tubes were just slid over solid ends of original frame, arc welded, then smoothed. With some prior measuring of rear of a stock frame and very careful grinder work, to undo the stretch might be relatively easy. (of course they may have cut the original ends right off, or poured in a heap of plug welds to ruin your day, but I reckon its worth stripping the paint and investigating)
