In the real world , pre 51, that would be the case. But this is a press fit gear

The factory pinion gear tool sets the gear location. Do you have one?
Conversely,
Just think of this logically, how much crank end play do you use? If the crank is all the way to the right side how far is that? How much clearance when all the way right do you need between the gear and the bushing?
Even without the tool it isn't too hard to determine the location.

Crank end play is set right now at .013". I inherited 2 big totes of original Harley tools. I'll have to look and see if that puller pusher is in there. Some still have the original Harley instruction paper work with them.If I remember right, I think the paper work on one was from 1943 or 1944

The pusher puller did not exist until the push on gear became a part, along with the left hand threaded pinion shaft. So no '43 or '44 paperwork.

You're reading way too much into the conversation there Rubone. I said I have 2 totes full of original Harley tools. SOME have paperwork. I didnt say that I have that particular tool, wont know til I go dig thru them. Nor was I referring to whatever tool that does have that 43/44 paper work was the pusher puller tool
