What is todays best for cleaning clutch plates? Used white gas years ago but is hard to find here. Something that will not harm the adhesives.

The plates are steel and bullet proof.
The fiber discs may be cleaned with spray can brake clean, it's design for friction materials, is generally non toxic, and not nearly as dangerous a gasoline....

White gas is just Coleman fuel. It is "white" because it doesn't have dye in it signifying payment of vehicle fuel tax. Regular Mineral Spirits works as well.

My brother is a painter and told me Mineral spirits is the same thing as BBQ charcoal starting fluid. Try some BBQ fluid.

If they`re soaked bad you always can cook them in water and washing powder.

I agree, put the plates in a large pot and stack them with nuts and bolts so the water can get completely get around them. Boil them for an hour or so and watch all of the oil float to the top!

One wouldn't want to eat out of my oven as its used to heat tranny cases to get the countershaft bushings and high gears out.

For a quick in situ clean I used this method. Brakeleen through an appropriate screw hole. Have an assistant hold clutch lever in and crank kicker is best though I have done it alone. Actually you don't even need to remove derby cover but you do need to work out which screw hole lines up with the gap between plates and basket. Give it a good drenching while kicking over with clutch disengaged, job done. OK for a quick fix when time is short.
These days my clutch is working better with other tweaks so aren't needing this so much.. Idea might adapt to yours... good luck, hope this helps.

I use brake cleaner for everything else but was concerned with the bonding. Now I know and thanks for all your input. All great ideas. Thanks much.

Well. ya' don't really need to soak the linings in the stuff, just spray and wipe dry. If your linings are soaked in oil, you are either running a wet clutch, or you have a bigger oiling problem. Check that hub nut seal...

RooDog, had cover off for another chore so I wanted to break the glaze. No oil on clutch. Just a little p.m. now and then.

There are so many different brands and compositions of clutch linings. I don't do anything more than spray and wipe dry my linings, no glaze breaking unless I'm dealing with some unknown swap meed discs.
