Petcock leaking on 1991 softail

I noticed my petcock getting rather hard to turn from open to closed .and versa versa . Tonight I decided to lube it up, but once I turned it to the open position gas leaked out . Not just a few drops ,but quite a bit . I bought this petcock about a year ago .
It's a good thing I noticed it to night or I'd have been riding along with fuel leaking.
Tomorrow I'll drain the tanks and take the petcock apart ,if possible . Is this something that happens now and again ? What can I do to prevent this from happening in the future ?

Could be the polymer O-ring swelling and coming apart.

Petcock, what petcock did you buy? Is it AM or Genuine HD, and why did you replace it in the first place?
Many after market (AM) p-cocks are junk. Period.
Just go ahead an purchase a Pingel. Believe me, you won't regret it after the initial sticker shock wears off.
Now, if you are stuck with a pre-1966 tank valve, I can't help you on that....
PS: A Pingel is easy to rebuild, or they can do it for you, cheap. and I have found them on eBay for a little as $50 used.
I run them on my bikes.
