Re: Alignment-problems Muffler/Y-Pipe/Exhaust
Ok, I searched Palmers and the Service manual.... I have trouble removing the S-Pipe. It's stuck between motor and frame.
What's the magic to get it out?

Re: Alignment-problems Muffler/Y-Pipe/Exhaust
Have to get back here. Still have Problems with my Exhaust setup.
I have a 1962 FLH with 2-in-1-Cigar Exhaust and Centerstand.
Currently there seems to be an aftermarket Muffler-Support Tube mounted. This Tube has the correct holes etc. but its not dropping down between the second and the fourth hole (as it should for a right-side muffler support tube by about 1/2 inch).
Also the support-tab on the frame for the squish-pipe has been cut away.
Currently I am waiting for the correct muffler support tube (#65318-58) to arrive.
I searched the whole Knowledge-Base, but couldn't find a hint to solve my problem.
My Problem: i finally was able to mount the front cylinder pipe and secure it to the frame with the two P-clamps, the squish pipe sits well and so does the rear cylinder pipe. Y-Pipe looks good as well. The Y-Pipe is in line with the lower frame bar. Looks correct to me.
But if i put on the Muffler over the Y-Pipe and try to secure the front muffler clamp (#65276-62) it won't fit to the 2nd hole of the muffler support tube. The muffler support tube sits too high so that the hole of the clamp won't align with the 2nd hole. The clamp-hole simply sits too high by about an inch. I would have to bend the Muffler and YPipe up very much - too much in fact then it will get misaligned with the squish pipe - to be able to get the bolt through the holes.
Even with the correct support tube it won't work since the first two holes of the support tube don't have a downslope.
Does anybody have an idea what the reason for this might be and where to look for? Engine too low? Engine mounted not level? Or frame bent?

Re: Alignment-problems Muffler/Y-Pipe/Exhaust
Ok, tried to make Photos from fron to aft.
First Photo is the front cylinder pipe. I think here it sits right. The pipe goes up to the spigot all the way.
I don't think the cause of the problem is here

Next Photo shows double P-clamps on lower right frame just above the brake-pedal mount. Everything sits snug and fine.
Another angle of Squish-Pipe:
Situation on rear cylinder. This might be the cause. I was unable to bring the rear pipe up to the stop of the spigot. Maybe these are the infamous 5mm that keep me from mounting correct.

Next is Squish-Pipe area. The mounting tab on the frame was removed by previous ownerAnother angle of Squish-Pipe:

Picture 2 pipe clamps bolts should be on outside of frame and placed higher up toward frame bend

Re: Alignment-problems Muffler/Y-Pipe/Exhaust
The bolt/tabs for the front header pipe clamps should be on the outside, not the inside as you have them. Refer to the photos people sent you earlier n this thread.DeltaElite wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2023 7:53 pm Next Photo shows double P-clamps on lower right frame just above the brake-pedal mount. Re: Alignment-problems Muffler/Y-Pipe/Exhaust
Front clamps outside is not possible. Will interfere with rear brake line then

I don't think your brake line is bent properly

Re: Alignment-problems Muffler/Y-Pipe/Exhaust
I fitted a NOS aftermarket system about 5 -6years ago. Took 2 days, such was the battle. Amongst other things, I had to include a spacer on the frame clamps set up as pictured.
One other thing I had to do was move the squish pipe bracket on the frame. After cutting the old one off, I made a new bracket, bolted it to the squish pipe then welded it where it landed.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
PS. there is more details of my exhaust fitment antics in my blog in the exhaust system section.

Re: Alignment-problems Muffler/Y-Pipe/Exhaust
Thank You Excalibur.
What was the reason why you had to put the spacer in between the front clamps? What was different without it?
I tried and tried to make it fit today... no chance.
I loosened everything up. Even went so far that I didnt connect the squish and front pipe at all.
No chance to get the Ypipe in an angle that it would fit the clamps on the muffler support strut. Allthough it is the wrong strut (not pointing downward) it's already predictable that it won't fit with the correct strut either.
It's even impossible to tilt the ypipe so high in the rear that the muffler to ypipe clamp would fit.
So the problem must be the rear cylinder pipe. I removed the Oil lines to have better handling. Absolutely NO chance.
My assumption is: the rear cylinder pipe is not going far enough up to the exhaust outlet of the cylinder (see photos). I'm still about 5mm away from the top. I tried to bend the pipe open a bit. That gave me maybe a millimeter.
Also the pipe is restricted by the kicker-spring.
Any ideas? Am i missing something?
