Seatpost Bushings 1967 Early Shovel

#1

Post by hdmarkus »

Hi,

I have tried to find out where these bushings (see pictures) are located because they are worn. The service manual mentions nothing about these parts. Are there really 2 bushings? How can I remove this and how can I put the new one in?

Tips are very appreciated

Markus

Markus,
Usually only 1 bush per bike, right at top of frame.
You might find early rigid frames had higher grease nipple and bush drilled for grease
Nipple for swing-arm frame somewhat below bush

Use an old screwdriver or similar tool and a hammer
Collapse the old bush so press-fit friction is destroyed
Grab old bush with pliers and pull out

Gently install new bush with hammer and block of hardwood or similar
Ensure bush is going in straight before you seriously start hitting
If carefully installed they don't usually need reaming.

You might want to clean & service the pogo while its out.
Don't forget to rotate pogo assembly until D nut drops into D hole at bottom of frame, then attach to seat T, then tighten special nut at underside of frame

Is all in OE FL shovel service manuals, as well as all the earlier manuals

My '68 has two seat post bushings (47094-58) like the ones you have shown.

My parts book, H-D # 99456-78, shows two bushings, # 47094-58, from 1958 onward....
I would replace the top one, as it it accessible for removal, and leave the lower one in place. The lower one is not as loaded as the top one, so it is probably OK....

Had a shovel for years, but it was an FX so no seat post (although a WL post will fit in an FX frame if you weld a washer on the bottom of the down tube). Just learning about this stuff myself now with my '68.

The WL seat post thing is an '80s deal for later 5 speed frames, any 70s era FX had thew same frame as an FL and standard seat posts fit, the bushings were already there from the factory.

Tried it with my 1981 Low Rider (4-speed cow-pie tranny) for a little while, back when solo seats weren't unobtanium. Decided it looked goofy on the FX frame.

Yeah, true for 70's frames, but the approx 80 or 81up 4 speed frame did away with casting at top of seatpost, used 2 sheet steel pressings to join all tubes up. Don't think you can get a BT pogo in many of them, hence WL pogo. Maybe some 80's police frames still had BT pogo & solo seat, most civilian FLH had comfort flex so didn't need pogo, ditto all FX.
