Model 51 generator

#1

Post by jerryd »

Hey kids
Taking apart a model 51 generator with fan . Spider is missing. Does anyone have a parts list for this generator. What parts fit the drive end? And does this gear come off with this setup? Put a fair bit of pressure on it, but no movement. Keyed? or pinned?
Thanks for the help

Morning
Will any of the other drive gears with or without slinger fit the Model 51 generator?
I cannot find a parts diagram/list for part numbers in documentation or online
Thankyou
jerry

The list is on this site in the documentation section in the 1954 catalog.

Thank you Rubone
However the drive end on mine looks different. The drive is two piece and I expect a spring /washer/pin not shown on that generator part list. I think the one piece I am trying to pull is on a spline shaft; may need some heat.
None of the parts lists I have or on this site show this drive end.
A search gens for sale show other model 51's with the same. But I would hope to find some part numbers
Thanks for all help

That looks like the incorrect gear. I believe the gear should have the matching ratchet teeth. I had a problem with the parts for one I was working on as well. Ended up making a spider for the fan cooled side.

Thanks for the pic
The gear is correct and meshes nicely. Where can I find the parts to hold it on?
My search so far has found nothing

Yes thankyou . i have copied the part numbers and spent an hour this afternoon and only located bearings . I guess i will just keep searching . There are very few resources for parts here in Canada where i live. The generator on the bike is charging for now.
Hope to be in Wauseon in July
As always thanks for the advice

JerryD;
I'm attaching pictures of the collar that holds the gear in place and the complete drive setup. The collar is held b a pin much like a standard 32E, but of a smaller diameter. (just use a different size nail!). the Part you're having trouble removing is just a press fit on the armataure shaft. However, getting a hold of it is a pain. I made an adapter to pull genny gears, just a block of aluminum machined with a lip internally that will grab the edge of the gear (or drive flange in the case of the radio generators). I show a pic of the setup I use, except that I clamp the block in my vice rather that just a machinist's clamp. But I don't have a vice on my computer desk :-(.
As for the collar that holds the spring and gear in place, the one shown in the pics is one that I made on the lathe. A piece of bar stock turned to the 2 different diametersThe smaller diameter is the same as the end of the armature shaft, the larger flange is large enough to hold the spring in place and isn't critical. You can scale the collar's Height? from relative size compared to the gear. The dimension is not too critical. Of course, drill the hole in it to fit on the end of the shaft, an another to fit the pin. The spring isn't critical, I cut them from Remington 1100 clapped out action springs!
The fan generator is well worth using, I love these things, they are a real power house. I did a conversion of a '58R to 12 volts by installing 65A fields and was able to power up heated gloves on my trip to Daytona a few years ago. They're good for 20 amps easily. Maybe could even have run a vest!
I don't know of any place that sells these parts, I scarf them at the swap meets when I can find them.

thankyou Frankenstein,
Good suggestions. I have a lathe and can make that end piece no problem. will keep looking for that spring. How important is the slinger? Maybe someone has a suggestion/ idea of making one. I have never seen one. Will other generator slingers work with Model 51? My puller is pictured in first post here. Not budging yet so will try some heat.
Thankyou all

The slinger is only used on Flathead versions. What are you putting it on?

Good luck on pulling the drive disk. I've never had one that seems as hard to budge as yours is.
If you are mounting this on a flathead, you will need the slinger. As with most stuff, I've tried not using one, and using a slinger that was cut down until it looked just like the washer that Sporty's used. Neither was a good idea. PM me if you get stuck regarding the slinger, may be able to help.
Again, the spring is NOT critical. As I mentioned earlier I've fabricated springs with good results.

So the clutch part is pulled , brushes are out , The two long bolts are out. Now here is where i need some more help. How to get these wires off? that slot screw won't budge after two days of repeated penetrating oil aplication. Heat will only melt the solder. Open to sugestions
Thank you as always.
