Remove Oilpump with engine still in frame
I've got a -52 Panhead with a early style oilpump-body. I wonder if it's possible to remove the Oil pump body with the motor still in frame? Or is the studs too long so you cant slide the body off before it hits the frame? Ok if it has to be disassebled piece by piece first.

Re: Remove Oilpump with engine still in frame
You can definitely get the pump off without removing the engine from the frame.
As I recall, you will have to disassemble the pump piece by piece, so that you can leave the drive shaft in the motor.
You can't pull the pump with the drive shaft still attached, the shaft is too long.
While the pump is off (and while re-installing it), make sure to keep the drive shaft pulled all the way out of the engine, or else the drive gear and key inside the gearcase may come unengaged, and you'll have to open up the gearcase to get them back where they need to be.

Re: Remove Oilpump with engine still in frame
I've done it a few times. As stated above, you have to watch out you don't drop the key out of the shaft inside the cam chest. It's a little extra work, but I've found that if you remove the cam chest cover you can hold a dental pick or small screwdriver inside the cam chest against the oil pump shaft to hold it from pushing in. You will have to pull the cover anyway if you drop the key, plus you'll have to fish around for the key with a magnet. And the key is very small. Pulling the cam cover is also a hell of a lot less work than pulling the motor.

Re: Remove Oilpump with engine still in frame
The biggest issue with removing a pump that way is the inability to check for free running/proper clearance on reassembly. If the gears or shaft are bound up you won't know until something gives, usually one of the keys. Gasket thickness is an issue as well. Ideally you want as thin a gasket as possible to provide the least amount of side play in the gears, a source of pressure loss. If your case has factory alignment pins in it that will help but is not a sure bet. I much prefer being able to spin a pump by hand after it is all tightened up.

Make your own. Improved my pump flow. James were over .009 but made good template
I have also carefully removed this pump engine in frame and gear case cover intact

With only the oil pump cover removed, rotate your engine until all the key ways are on top. Makes reassembly much easier.

They are still usable.
And better still, invested in a working oil pump
