Anybody have any experience with the reproduction electromagnetic 3 brush cutout relays? Palmer said the first reproductions were wound backwards and didn't work well. Are the current ones any better? The gen light on my '53 recently started flashing and I found the armature spring is somehow missing and relay won't play nice without it. The relay is an old Japanese replacement. I don't have any originals in my stash.

I just bought the new ones, from flatlander motorcycle, look just like oem.. more riding and less down time.

Re: 3 brush cutout relay
If you had one that was wound backwards, I don't think it would work at all.
If it ever worked, then it is either burned out or needs adjustment.
Check my thread in the KB for info on rewinding the relay if you feel like doing that.

Re: 3 brush cutout relay
Thanks to both. Good luck with the flatlander model.
Andy I have read your thread on rewinding {thanks for that} but as stated, my issue is with the spring broken off of the armature. I was only referencing Palmer's warning about backward wound replacement relays.
I am going to take a chance on a new reproduction relay and hope that they are better now.

Make sure to come back and let us know how it works out! (for the benefit of the next guy who has the same question)

Re: 3 brush cutout relay
Received Delco Remy 6 volt replica relay from 45 Restoration Co. (#74750-38). Cover would not fit on base without a lot of filing.
All three contact point gaps were set to spec when delivered. I did not check voltage needed to open gen light contact but light goes out as soon as engine starts.
So far, so good.
