Springer rocker alignment

#1

Post by fenderguitarleo »

I have an issue with a new V Twin servicar style springer with outside rockers. The rockers appear to be out of alignment when installing the axle. Should the rockers be left loose while inserting the axle and then snug up. I have to drive the axle in pretty hard to get it through the left side.

With the rockers tight the axle should align fine with both sides. Check the fork ends to see if they are misaligned, drilled crooked, etc.

I bought a repro springer from Flatland that I’m using on my G model. You should be able to drive the axle through with a plastic mallet without any issues. I’ve had mine apart dozens of times during my rebuild and never had an issue. You would be able to push it in by hand, def have to use a mallet. Best of luck

An alignment problem will likely cause the rockers to stick when in service. I have an aftermarket front end that did just that. I was able to realign the rear fork without removing the front end from the motorcycle.

Hey Larry thanks for the info. Could you explain what you had to do to realign the rear fork ? I'm just digging into it today.

The repair is done WLA, with Whatever is Layin' Around. I have a small lathe, so it's easy for me to cut threads. If I didn't have that luxury, I'd think of something else. Determining exactly what is wrong can be the hardest part. Ten minutes of thinking is worth two hours of muscle.

Leo ,
Did you check to see if your left and right side springs and adjusted the same? May be a long shot, but if they're not, that might cause a problem.
Cheers!

Leo,
One more thing for you. I purchased the V-Twin Springer from Flatland back in 2019. The first time I installed the axle it was "slightly" misaligned.
I was able to physically push up on the outer thinner tube that was lower by hand to realign. It doesn't move alot, but enough to get the axle through. I would try installing the axle without the tire and pushing up on the low side. There's not much of a load on the springs at this point. Worth a shot.
Cheers!
