Cone style cam cover
I have a mostly aftermarket 48/49 pan. It has a very interesting cone style cam cover. Has anybody ever seen something like this ? I will try and post a picture. It is not a shovel cam cover.

Yes Andy. Just like that, except mine has two horizontal bars and is polished/ chromed. If my cover was a Sputhe, would it say anywhere on the unit?

Re: Cone style cam cover
Several aftermarket versions exist. I cannot recall who all made them (they were never of interest to me), but they were available for many years...
It seems like Nostalgia Cycle or whoever those guys were who advertised in the old "Super Cycle" had one in their line.

Re: Cone style cam cover
I am using one on my '68 Shovelhead, and have had it for years. You must use a 1970 to E 77 cam, and clearancing may be necessary as the base circle & lobes of that cam are greater than what usually goes in a Pan. Also the early Panhead inner cam bushing is not correct for the cam's inner race. It should mate with a Torrington full compliment thin shell needle bearing.
Here is my motor last year before I began its resurrection. It is a Sputhe cover, and they are still available from Sputhe, as of last week.
I did this so I could run a modern electronic ignition, a Crane Hi4, to be exact....

Re: Cone style cam cover
I am running a Sifton 104 cam and needle bearings. Runs well and starts reasonably easy. I bought the bike in this configuration. It is done out to 88 ci. I can keep up with the more modern Harleys.

Re: Cone style cam cover
If you can squeeze a 5-speed in behind that 88, and adjust the sprocket ratios, you'll be able to smoke a lot of newer Harleys both on the street and the highway....
PS: For anybody else reading this, the Sputhe cover comes sans bushings, so the installer need to source, install, and fit both cam and pinion bushings, then it'll be time to rock & roll....

PS: That 2 into 1, ceramic coated, pipe , with 2" glass pack core Supertrapp megaphone, is for sale....

Re: Cone style cam cover
I agree it does look cool and just different enough. Often, people think that I’m running a Shovel bottom.

Re: Cone style cam cover
I've always thought they were ugly on a Panhead lower but they do allow ignition and camshaft upgrades so there is a bit of an advantage for a modified bike.

Re: Cone style cam cover
Yep, it is fugly, but I can't see it from the seat, and they can't see it from behind. LOL....
I think it would have helped if Alan had included at least four fins like on the later Pans, no?

Re: Cone style cam cover
Verdad! I never cared for smooth cam covers much. When I got my '65 I put a '64 cam cover on it. And a Shovelhead top end!!
