would a heli-coil be ok or over size adjusters any buddy else have this problem

Personally, I would prefer a Helicoil rather than an over sized new bolt. You go OS and then you'll need to source a suitable bolt & jam nut. None of that would be necessary with the correct thread size, 3/8-24, provided by an insert.
But then, that's just the way I would do it.....

Had the same problem on my 47. Used 2 helicoils in each side providing full thread through the entire casting.

There are longer length Heli-Coils out there as well if you don't want to stack them.

Look into timeserts. They are a steel insert that is far better than a helicoil. They have them for most size applications even spark plug holes.
