Trans weld repair

#1

Post by Bsimmons »

So one of my bottom mounting studs had pulled out to the point that it’s gonna need welded up te drilled and tapped. My question is so I need to pull all the gears for this to happen. Thanks

I would remove the gear sets, but not sweat anything pressed in place. But the case will need to be well cleaned, boiled in a pot of water to float out any residual oil, and probably preheated before the actual welding process,.
Or you might look into OS studs.....

There is an oversized, 1/2-13 x 3/8-24, stud listed, OEM # 34723-47,
Colony # 9655-4, & V-Twin # 12-2105 by Eastern.
Original stud should be 7/16 on the case end, and 3/8 for the fastener end.
A Helicoil might also work too, just be sure to seal the hole with epoxy, or something....

Oversize repair studs from Colony work well and avoid welding. Performing this repair while assembled may actually take longer than disassembling. You may want to take this opportunity to give the gearbox a tuneup.
