Speedometer bezel tool

#1

Post by Eb74UL »

Do you guys know how the bezel is installed on a speedometer, is the edge rolled down or crimped?
I am planning to make my own tool and I am debating between making a tool that rolls the edge down or a tool that crimps it down...

A tool that crimps it down would be something that works like a forging process... this would require many dies that progressively squish down the edge of the bezel until it gets crimped down flat. Likely a 3 to 4 step process.

A rolling tool would likely have to be adjustable to gradually bend down the lip of the bezel... I am leaning toward the crimping tool for ease of manufacturing the tool. What do you think?

Any of you know how it is actually done? either back then or today?

It is rolled. The speedo is held in place and the edge tool follows the rim in a continuous motion.

That 's a quick reply Rubone!

Do you know how many turns it takes to complete the bending?

Although I have not done it myself, a friend has done one for me with a large piece of PVC pipe, rocking it around to bend the rim in place. And he had some “Harley Davidson” decals made up to fake an OG face.

Palmers books have a description and instructions using a lathe and a pic of the factory tool.
