Flatboy.

Agree that the '47 should not have the hex-head rear axle. Just to be clear, some early '48s had the rectangle axle head.

I’ve seen Knuckle cases with fake 48 SNs and Pan cases with fake 47 SNs and most owners accept the problems when they are pointed out. Sometimes we see later-style replacement cases stamped with the SN from the original pair but on one occasion in particular an owner seemed convinced he had a 47 Pan. He was advised that anyone making such a claim would have to provide factory evidence but he wouldn’t even post a partial SN photo. No picture of the BN either but there was going to be at least one problem with it because he said it began with 147-.

Photos did appear however on another forum about five years later and it seemed the owner still thought the numbers may be authentic but people advised him the number boss looked altered and the SN had the wrong 4. (Other SN characters were wrong too.) Also looking altered was the BN area and I explained problems with the code number and other BN characters. Three months later he posted a photo of a left case with casting number 112-481 and date code J 9 so I told him what the markings indicated. This of course was the case from the alleged 47 Pan but later in the same thread he said his guess was that the SN was a restamp by a dealer. However, a few days after that he changed his mind again and he asked how anyone would know the SN wasn’t done at the factory. Remember this was after he’d been told both number areas looked altered and that the SN and BN were not consistent with factory stamping. And apparently he’d forgotten that I told him the left case was cast in 1949.

A few years ago he said he’d sold the last of his Pans. I don’t know who bought the fake 47.
