Sorry more dumb questions. I am trying to install a mousetrap to my 59 flh. I have bought a used clutch release arm, but it seems too long. Can someone let me know how long the clutch release arm should be? Mine measures 12 3/4" from the pivot to the chamfered slot. The pull rod seems to go diagonally to the mousetrap and the rod does not sit well in the arm. Did they do a longer one for foot clutches?
Also the book says to adjust the arm to be 4 1/4" from the foot shifter housing to the chamfered slot. Is this measured from the rearmost point on the housing and diagonally to the arm slot? Or should it be a parallel measurement along the line of the frame?

Hi Paul,
I've attached some pics from the riders manual. There's the complete instructions of how to adjust a mousetrap, and shoes you exactly how to measure the 4.5" measurement.
The release arm measure correctly. According to the parts book hand and foot shift used the same arm.

Thanks for that, just what I needed. I think I have a pattern release arm as it seems to stick a long way out even though the centres are as yours? I cannot work that out.

Your clutch arm does appear a little long, doesn't it. I have no idea why, wish I did.
Maybe you can get your hands on another one. Stock arms were not chromed, they are Parkerized.

Your release arm is an aftermarket item for a mouse trap eliminator set up, and won't work. Your oil tank/primary cover/chain guard hardware looks to be bolted up tight. You'll want to get the correct drilled bolt/spring arrangement to prevent cracking of all your mounting tabs.

Well I sorted it out! Thanks Gotnoclass.
I shortened the release arm approx. 1/2" and re made the end, set the mousetrap up as per manual and it works a treat. An easy 2 finger clutch.
Only a couple more weeks and it should be on the road.

Thanks VPH-D, springs are arriving today for primary mounting.

Just to add one more thing,,,
Do I see a copper brake line?
Consider a steel line, the copper may soon crack from vibration.
Then it's front brake only for the way home.

The problem is, the arm was made incorrectly. OEM ones are bent slightly. I just got one from V-Twin (18-3603) and it is tweeked the way originals are. The other aftermarket ones are straight.

Hello,
I do not mean to hijack this thread but I thought because it is on the same topic I should ask here. In general, is it ok that the clutch lever hits the Transmission Top when engaging the clutch? Is this the "stop" for this operation or should the stop be in the friction disc section?

It should NOT hit. Close but no contact. And no, that isn't a "stop".

So the "stop" should be at the end of the throw-out bearing travel? Or should the pedal hit the floorboard?
