Oh.

Raw fuel for cold starting?
At $4.20 a gallon?

The M74B has a sprung poppet valve in its choke disc, designed to limit vacuum produced by kicking to draw only measure of emulsion from its accelerator "sump", and not the raw fuel below it.
Raw fuel can't be good for rings, especially at start-up.
Successive clicks on the Linkert's choke tab allow the mixture to remain rich for warming in very cold weather, without need for repeated rough revving before oil has fully circulated.

i to put a quickstart 2000 on my 58 pan,i have found that you want to use very little retard when starting, the amount that we used w/dist. will give you nothing but fits...been in your shoes. also try retarding as you shut engine down , seems to help w/hot starts.also make sure you have the corect coil per instructions.

With the engine off, does anyone know the range of advance available by rotating the timer in terms of degrees BTDC? That is, does the timer say, go from 5 degrees BTDC to 15 deg BTDC etc.

Hiway-star!

By laying a degree wheel upon an OEM manual-advance timer, the gap that the mechanism can travel is a bit confused by the angled cut at its advanced stop.
But it appears the timer can allow the timing to be retarded by as much as 38° from the firing point!

No wonder half-retarded works fine for starting.
