Emile, you’re welcome. Here’s the photo I have and it sounds like the one you described.

Photo.jpg

Unfortunately the second picture you sent of the SN doesn’t help me. I'd like an extremely clear close-up of the entire SN but maybe you’ll be able to provide that when you get the smart phone.

Do you mean your engine does not have the cap screw shown below? It’s mentioned in Shop Dope 330 that I posted above. If you don’t have this cap screw then your R-H case is early-52 or earlier.

As for your left case, it may be a different story and the BNs may help with that. But for now, does the area around the front bolt look like this?

Later style.jpg

Or does it look like the next example, with less material and the bolt hole not extending so far out?

Emile does Maine require minimum insurance no fault policy? if so do you have a current Maine tag? therefore insurance company vehicle trace found no problem , so somewhere in its life someone made the numbers legal that would be where seemed problem starts , I to see ghosting of first to digits as 6 0 and if everybody would look at the rest of the stamping you can see the strike angles down and deep to set the number the two 8,s are just stamped with small lines in the 8, also Emile you could call a independent forensic lab to see if they could wipe your numbers in, the ground serial number test of anything else to see if the 8,s are not true and ask if test is performed would it hurt your aluminum case? all info i have shows 52 fl,s at 5,554 and fs at 186 this is out of legend begins book and 53 fl 74 ohv at 1,986 ,1951 highest sales year and 52,s second highest for the 50,s I know these very from different publications and hope you get this cleared up

Yes Maine does require insurance, the owner before me had it with Progressive, the company sent a man to has home to take photos , in order to show the bike, and its condition, registration, miles and extra added parts, odometer. he had it insured for apr six months, and his wife is a Progressive agent. Now i also had Progressive for apr six monthe,,then it was canceled by them , they did not like the pictures i sent for value over book, or that is what they told me,, it still has good Maine Tags untill July 2021. how does the changed ser # effect the value of the motorcycle, if i only want a period correct bike, not for shows. if it was changer legally for whatever reason then in its own way it is correct ? Hagerty is the way to go, “Agreed on value”, send some pics, tell them what it’s worth and you get full coverage with 15 mile free ramp truck towing. Only thing is, it can’t be your only registered vehicle in the state. Not your daily driver.

Yes, I have agreed upon value and "Cherished Salvaged Coverage". I would get the agreed upon value if a total loss or stolen and then Hagerty will also return the motorcycle to me as well.

Emile, I’m wondering if you have mismatched cases. Notice the early case (orange box) has an early F while the later case (blue box) has a later F. But apparently the two things didn’t change at the same time. Instead it seems the early F was still in use when the later case appeared as per the example below.

Left case.jpg

And judging by other examples I have thus far the F didn’t change until way after the tappet oil screen appeared. Your F looks like the later type but you haven’t got provision for the oil screen so maybe your cases are mismatched. Photos of the BNs may tell us more about that.

Just go to Hagerty.com to get details on their Agreed Value insurance.

They have valuation tools also. They are not going to insure it for some incredibly crazy value, but they are pretty up to date on the value of these things.

I've got several policies with them and all are reasonably priced with the same coverage you would find at any of the other insurers.
