Can someone please explain the difference between shock absorbers
54502-65 (1965-1966 FLH)
&
545503-65 (Sporty XLH)
They look exactly the same.
I am referring to just the cartridge not whatever else goes with it.

Re: Shock Absorbers ?
The Sportster is a lighter bike and the shocks mount far to the rear, near the axle, direct acting, so they are softer, lower weight supporting springs.
The Big twin shocks are cantilevered, mounting part way down the swing arm, increasing the leverage placed upon them, and also being a heaver motorcycle, they require heavier springs. Valving? I don't think Harley cared much about valving back then.
If you are looking for replacement, and inexpensive, shocks, look for some spec'd for a Dynaglide, available in different lengths, but are sprung acceptably for an older FL. I use them on my '68 FL, and my Big Red Evo bagger glide....
DO NOT USE Sportster or FXR shocks, they are too weak for the weight of a swing arm FL .....
