Are there internal differences between the tops that have the lever up vs. lever down?

Yes, the drums are different and are mirror image of each other. The conventional drum is marked FL, the FX drum is unmarked. If you use the wrong one on your bike it will shift backwards. From the factory the FX type has three locating pins on the lever, the FL only two. The FX type first appeared with the through the primary shifting, the early FX used a backwards shift lever... :roll:
