Piston Choice...
OK,
Lets say I found a front and rear cylinder Standard Bore cylinders, both coded 58 ( Nov-Dec 58 )
And I know of a place where I can get NOS pistions............From .010" OS with rings and pin and keepers, on up to larger sizes....
Would there be any advantage to use these pistons and rings as original...
OR----
OR, use something like Wisco pistons and Hastings rings?
George

Re: Piston Choice...
I would use the pistons, but probably not the rings. Fresh (new) rings are cheap insurance....bosheff

Re: Piston Choice...
USE the pistons & a new set of rings!--Cast pistons are good for a runner. Weisco are quality but you will have to add weight to the wheels to stay in or close to the percentage factor that they are set to!--The cast pistons with hastings rings work well!----RICHIE

Re: Piston Choice...
Hopefully last question on this subject...
I've been looking at old posts, and thought that I would be better off asking the experienced folks this question:
Hastings 3 piece oil control rings?
Or use the 1 piece oil ring.
Any advantage - disadventage using one over the other?
Thanks.
George

Re: Piston Choice...
One piece oil rings are ancient trch. Take a close look at them and imagine them half worn away. The modern three piece rings, actually four pieces, counting the expander, will never wear out, that is, the two rails will always present the same contact with the cylinder wall....

Re: Piston Choice...
Hi all.
Very happy with the .010" over keith black pistons.
Got 55 1/2 k miles off the original pistons.
The KB pistons are up a bit on flh compression which makes it buzz along nicely at 70mph.
Have done 1200 miles since Xmas with a nice motor now.
Regards B.B.

Re: Piston Choice...
KB has got numerous pistons. Some are coated, some aren`t. Dish, flattop, hemi top ? Hi -higher real low compression? Forged /Hyperereutic ?
Sorry Bob. Only the specific number on the package telling us what you`re happy with

Re: Piston Choice...
Sorry about that I didn't know KB made so many pistons for Panheads.
Hyperereutic 9.1 and they look too good to use.
Match these with kibblewhite valves, cast guides and their spring kits and you got a nice top end.

Re: Piston Choice...
Surely no one would run flat top, or dished pistons in either a Knuckle, Pan, or Shovelhead motor, bixt that they are all true hemispherical heads and require some sort of a dome provide even minimal amount of compression. 9:1 with the right cam should prove responsive, but fuel quality and timing become critical. Back in the 1960s, 10:1 slugs were our usual choice....

I use KB hypereutectic pistons.
