1960 rear brake assembly and tire install
I have 1960 FLH beat up chopper I inherited and trying to restore to the original Duo Glide model.
This has been torn apart, frame repainted front end done, swing arm on with the shocks.
Now attempting to put rear brake assembly and tire on.
The rear brake assembly that came on this chopper is a 63-65 model.
I have then installed the correct spacers for this version according to Bruce Palmers III book, but with the tire on, it will slide side to side 1/4".
The right side flanged spacer sits next to the swing arm, but there's a 1/4" space on the right side like there's supposed to be another spacer there.
It does not show it in the book.
What am I missing here?

Since you're not sure what you have, you should start by getting a measurement between the axle plates on the swingarm. Next, make sure the chain sprocket aligns with the trans with your spacer setup on the left, which may or may not have been modified in the past, then the wheel/tire assy lined with front ( could have been laced offset?). If all that looks good then get a longer spacer. I fit a brake like yours into a '54 rigid and it works great, but I had a small lathe handy and fitted parts as needed.

jvinella123, Since that is a '63 & up backing plate, you may not have the correct spacers for it installed. You may need the earlier, thicker swingarm to backing plate spacer. You should also, check the clearance of the grease slinger cup on the brake drum to the backing plate. Your axle plate sleeve needs to be the SECOND from the TOP in the picture for that backing plate. '63 to '66 brake drum grease cups don't project as far into the drum as earlier drums to avoid bottoming out against the backing plate. The thick part of the sleeve spaces the backing plate and drum to prevent the cup from rubbing on the plate. Doc

Doc,
The spacer setup as shown matches Palmers book second from top.
With the tire pushed all the way left, and then standing back and seeing how it lines up with the frame, it looks correct.
Moving it all the way to the right looks offset.

Is your right side spacer unmodified? If it was in a rigid before it would have been shortened.

I just ran across a Paugho rear wheel spacer, new in the the package, in my junk. It says it fits '58-'66 and it measures 2.450 in the package so I figure 2 7/16 (2.437). Hope this helps.

Re: 1960 rear brake assembly and tire install
Thanks for all your help. The rear axle spacer is 2.125. It has either been modified or came off a 67-72 model shown in Bruce Palmers book.
When I tore this chopper apart I did not notice another spacer or washers. I wonder if it was stuck to the rim when I pulled the axle out.
Bruce Palmers book shows it as 2.422, 2-27/64.
