Removing and installing rear wheel

Removing and installing rear wheel on a 58 swingarm frame sucks !!! Been at it for hours , now im going to take the shocks off and try dropping the swingarm down , got the bike hoisted up by the garage rafters with a come along , im 64 years old and been working on bikes for almost 50 years and what a terrible design ! What was Harley thinking !!!

It is normally about a 20 minute job. Remove the lug bolts between drum and hub. Remove axle and right side spacer. Raise hinged fender section. Let air out of tire. Lock brake on (have someone step on it or clamp it on however you can), Wiggle hub off of dowel pins. Pull wheel out rear of bike. Done.

Tryed that but didnt work , finally took off shocks , dropped swingarm wheel went back on no problem !

I also have to remove shocks due to my rear wheel not being offset ....it is closer to the right side of fender than the left ....when spoked up properly with correct offset it would be dead center and would have enough room to slide off the backing plate and drop down

Yes found out the wheel is not centered in the fender , at least not towards the back of the fender, its centered in the front of the fender. Used a string down the backbone of the frame from the steering stem and found out the swingarm is not bent and the string goes right down the center of thr tire so either the fender struts are bent (swap meet parts) or the top of the frame is bent where the struts attach . Didnt want to wait a week for new struts to get here in the mail so i put a .070 shim washer on the left strut between the strut and the frame where the shock stud mounts and another .070 x3/8 shim washer on the right side strut bolt thats like a couple inches back from the shock mount bolt between the strut and frame and tightened everything and now the fender is like dead center on the tire! Problem Solved !!!
