panhead triple trees

#1

Post by tbody321 »

hello all... I was wondering if someone could verify something in regards to adjustable triple trees....
I have all the palmer books, but confused in the wording depicting the differences. Are 1950 one year only triple trees, and then following years had
a letter A B C D after the casting number.... I sold a set of what I believe are 1950, and there were minor mounting problems when putting on a 57.
Shields didn't quite line up, fine thread vs course thread on fork tube top mount...
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Shields not lining up is usually because of wrong bearings or races in the cups. If trees are too far apart, bearings are too tall.
I'm not totally up on all the minor differences, but I believe trees should be a direct fit '49-'57. I think in '49 the tube pinch bolts are studs/nuts, then two different sizes of pinch bolts '50-'57. I'm too far from my Palmer's to look it up for you.

1950 adjustable trees use two bolts on the bottom to adjust.
1951 adjustable trees use a long bolt through stem to adjust.
I have seen bent trim that had to be straightened, if you have post 57 parts that can be a problem.
