Trumpet Horn Ground?

#1

Post by rozemab »

Where does the horn get its electrical ground?

Looking at the schematic it appears to be somewhere near the handlebars. But where is it located?

I would assume the red wire is the power wire and the black or green one,(can't recall recall color) goes thru the horn switch to ground. Also assuming you have the stock harness.

I recently rewired my bike close to stock. the ground itself comes from the handlebar switch to the terminal board inside headlight cowl then to horn. that is if you have stock harness. I think there is a diagram in the knowledge base somewhere? or I can take a pic from my manual if you need it. tim

Thanks for the replies. The PO had the ground at the horn mount. It works but it is weak, likely due to the voltage drops due to resistances.

I have access to the schematics too. Thank you for the offer.

Maybe it's a moot point. Is the trumpet that loud?

rozemab ground thru handlebars is stock I believe. there may be others who know better but I think the horn sound can be adjusted? I installed an aftermarket one on mine and it is adjustable.

The adjustment procedure is available in the shop manual, if you don't have one it's in documentation section of this site. Mine used to respond to adjustment but the best I can get now is weak bleat. If they can be repaired I've not been able to find a solution. Not sure if the repops are any good, can't be any worse than mine. You don't have to replace the whole horn, the power pack is in the jp catalog.

There's a small brass contact plate under the horn button that completes the circuit to ground when you push the button.
Perry Ruiter knows horns. If you can find his website, you'll get all the information, including repair information.
