I have a 1948 panhead with a stock transmission. In investigating a mainseal leak, I noticed that the sprocket is loose and has some back and forth play on the main shaft. The shaft itself seems ok. The seal was replaced not long ago, the sprocket is new, and I had installed one of those super nuts to secure the sprocket. I did not use the oem style lock washer ,but an arrangement which bolts to the sprocket to prevent movement of the nut.
Q-- I assume that this movement is not normal? Could the super nut not be totally flush against the sprocket because I didn't use the oem lock washer, which would have served as a spacer between the nut and sprocket?

Re: Loose transmission countershaft sprocket
Sprocket should be tight on shaft, not so super, use original nut and lock.

Re: Loose transmission countershaft sprocket
I just took a closer look and found that the main gear itself has the wobble in it. This is a later model gear which has the oil seal on the end of it. What would cause this to be loose?

And or MDG bushing. The gear with seal came out in '65, lots were used in overhauls since.Race or roller bearings are worn out.
