won;t start

Post by weiner69hd »

I have 60 flh; motor completely overhauled. It was rebuilt yrs. ago but has been sitting in the guys house for yrs. Its got solid pushrods; with wiesco 9 to 1 pistons. Compression on it is real low; about 35 to 40 psi. We took the heads off and checked them they are good. Manley stainless valves. Carb is s/s super E; you can kick your ass off and the plugs are dry. Checked the timing and points everything is where it should be. We took the cylinders off and rehoned them. I;ve noticed that there are 3 different lengths of pushrods. Any idea what I need to check or I might be missing????

If the plugs are dry, no fuel coming through,[especially after kicking for awhile, try a full choke] check that fuel is entering the SS bowl for starters.

Compression won't come up until the rings are seated.

We have also seen low compression readings due to a slipping clutch during tests. If your clutch slips you may not be getting full rotation of your motor while kicking. You can pop the top off your timer and watch it as you kick. I've seen them come up on compression and push the motor back as you release the kicker and never get past a compression stroke.

Squirt a little starting fluid or carb cleaner in the carburetor and see if you get some response. Does the accelerator pump squirt any gas? One thing that tripped me up more than once is having the timing "180 out"! Drop the front intake pushrod cover and slowly roll the motor around. When the front intake closes the narrow lobe of the timer should be coming around to open the points. If the fat lobe is approaching then your way out of time.

One more Pan on the road is one less twinkie!

Try 3 or 4 squirts of oil through the plug holes. This helps create a seal between rings and bores. Usually a trick for worn engines but it's worth a try.
Best of luck

Do you have spark at the plugs ? spark at the points ? S&S super E has no choke it has an enritchener . once you have both spark and fuel confirmed you should at least get it to pop. then check the timing .

sorry I cant spell enrichner this morning but that wont make any difference

Often when an engine sits for long periods the rings get gummed up and stuck in their grooves,, causing a severe compression loss. Most H-D big twins won't pull fuel when they have less than about 60PSI of compression. The oil in the cylinders will help get the number up, a light oil will also help get the rings unstuck.
