V-Twin POS

#1

Post by PanScott »

I have been thru the Brakes knowledge base like 5 times read all the applicable posts and still wonder:
Any one ever use VT No: 23-0248 Cast rear brake drum for EL 1937-1952,FL 1941-1957,UL 1937-1948 ? I bought one and their recommended "replica" cast brake shoes. I could not get it to clear the upper pivot pin or the brake shoes. I straightened the backing plate, rebuilt the bushing and actuating lever. The shoes are beveled, but the drum is not deep enough. I put the repop chrome stamped steel drum back on it and it has no problems. This aint my first rigid Panhead I don't know it all but I am not a dummie either. I screwed up and made some modifications trying to get it to work so I cant return it, turned it true, and faced some material off the inside face. In my opinion huge POS. I am curious to here others experiences.

I have used the vtwin shoes you rivet on original backing plate and also used their shoes and plates.
In both cases the assembly has to be turned on a lathe or belt sanded to fit in the drum.
This is a bit annoying, I think they do this to compensate for warn drums.
Are you saying the vtwin shoes are wider then original shoes ?

Likewise. The Paughco drum is a true replication of the OE drum. V-Twin shit is usually shit.

The linings were wider than the shoe. I'll throw some calipers on both when I pull the wheel off for the 20th time.

This is why I bought both the shoes and drum from V-T figuring their parts should work together. The drum fits over the backing plate OK but as soon as I get within 1-3/4 turns from being tight the corners of the shoe bind on the inside face of the drum. I have even ground those corner off like overkill as suggested in the knowledge base. That many turns is like .100" in lateral movement. There is just NFW this drum will fly.

Hi there.
Maybe the shoes are meant for the 63 up brake hub which was wider by 1/4".
Regards B.B.
